Military veterans seek support and release through song at LifeQuest music camp PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, January 26, 2012

radCOLORADO SPRINGS — After a rocket attack outside Nasiriyah, Iraq, shattered three bones in his spine, Kenneth Sargent’s doctors told him he’d spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Sixteen months later, he’s walking. And he wants to write a song about it.

Sargent’s phone is full of Prince hits. He likes Merle Haggard, too. But he doesn’t care whether his song is R&B or country. He just wants it to be about how America doesn’t understand its soldiers after a decade of war.

The 41-year-old Army staff sergeant was one of 11 veterans gathered at a plush hotel in this arid mountain town near Fort Carson last weekend to transpose their most difficult memories into music. The four-day camp was hosted by LifeQuest Transitions, a Colorado Springs-based nonprofit organization that helps veterans navigate the uncharted leap from the battlefield to civilian life — and one of the few doing it through the arts.

On Friday afternoon, Sargent plopped down on songwriter Radney Foster’s hotel room sofa and began to talk. About Iraq. About the suffocating heat. About the perpetual anxiety of combat. About the numbness that slowly crept up his legs in the blurry hours after the explosion that broke his back. About the depression that clamped down once he returned home. About the nights he spent laying on piles of dirty laundry in his bedroom closet, hoping to find enough quiet, enough darkness to sleep through his nightmares.

Country Your Way - Single Review

Single number three from the long standing 9th studio project from Clay, She Won't Be Lonely Long, comes after over two years of promotion for the record. The long wait has been more than worth it. Like is a very catchy love ballad that is reminiscent of Walker's hits in the mid 90's. Well written and extremely well performed, Like should be able to connect with many people and remind them of their loves and loves lost. Clay's success at radio has been very sporadic over the last decade, posting five top-10's and missing the top-20 with his seven other releases. Personally I hope it does well, but it is very hard to predict Clay's work. Whether or not it is successful it is a beautiful song and is one of the best in Walker's near two decade career.

Clay Walker's Mission Statement PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, December 21, 2011
clay-walker02Clay Walker is a man on a mission. And that mission is to raise awareness and funds to battle multiple sclerosis.

The country music entertainer, who has sold more than 11 million albums during the course of his 18-year career, was diagnosed with the disease in 1996, and since that time has raised more than $2 million through his Band Against MS nonprofit foundation.

“A lot of people suffer with this disease,” Walker said in a recent interview. “There are some 500,000 people in the U.S. alone. That’s not as huge a number as cancer or AIDS, but it’s a definite problem that it has not been brought to the forefront. We’d be a lot closer to a cure if there were more awareness.”

Walker has been in remission for the past 13 years and still records and tours around the country. In fact, his single “She Won’t Be Lonely Long” reached the top five on the Billboard charts last year, and he’s currently working on a greatest hits album expected to be released in 2012.

Brad Paisley Working on New Album in 2012, Reflects on Tragedy That Scarred Him PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, December 15, 2011

bdNext year will be a big one for Brad Paisley. In a recent interview with USA Today, the CMT ‘Artists of the Year’ honoree revealed that in addition to his huge Camobunga! Tour, he’ll also be working on a new album. 2012 is slated to be a year of “intense creativity.”

“I’ve got some strong possibilities for stuff that could be cool. If a few of them materialize, then I think 2012 is going to be not only the end of the world but a really creative Armageddon,” Paisley joked when asked about his next release.

His tour, which kicks off on Jan. 12, is also expected to be an inventive and unique project — or “very high-tech redneck,” in Paisley’s words. “We’ve got some cool technology. I like to take technology to where people walk out not sure how we did certain things. That’s always a goal of mine,” he said. “We’ve got a few of those in our bag of tricks. I got to see them the other day for the first time, and I was floored.”

We imagine that the ‘Old Alabama’ hitmaker will welcome 2012 with open arms, given the roller coaster ride that his personal life took in 2011. “My sister-in-law got married to a guy I think is fantastic. My brother-in-law had a baby,” Paisley shared. He then added that 2011 also brought the death of his wife’s cousin.

The singer said that the death in the family was especially scarring for him, because it’s the first time in his life that he’s had someone in his life that’s near his age die. “It’s crazy what that does to your psyche,” he admitted. “It’s the first person anywhere near my age that I’ve ever lost that I was that close to. We never had the kid in high school die, in my high school. There was never that phone call in the middle of the night that somebody has had a wreck. I realize that I’m really lucky to have made it to this age without that. And this is the first time that I’ve ever been that close. That’s what’s going to scar this year for me.”
